The role of parental acceptance and rejection, trait anxiety and coping with adolescent depression

Objective. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of parental acceptance and rejection, trait anxiety and coping on symptoms of depression in adolescents, as well as examine possible mediation effects. Participants and setting. Study was conducted in a school setting during regular classes. A sample of 211 adolescents (ages 16 through 19) completed
measures of parental acceptance and rejection, trait anxiety, coping and depression. Hypothesis. It was assumed that parental acceptance and rejection as well as trait anxiety and coping will have an effect on symptoms of depression in adolescents and that parental acceptance and rejection. Statistical analysis. Correlational and hierarchical regression analyses, as well as Hayes's bootstrapping method for testing mediation were used. Results. Results have shown that mother's rejection and father's acceptance had a significant effect on depression in the expected direction. After controlling for parental variables, trait anxiety predicted higher depression, and after controlling for both, coping predicted depression. Emotion focused coping and distraction predicted higher depression, while problem focused coping and social diversion predicted lower depression scores. Further analyses revealed that the effect of mother's rejection on depression was mediated by emotion focused coping, while emotion and problem focused coping as well as social diversion mediated the relationship between trait anxiety and depression. Study limitations. Correlational design and reliance on self-reported data in a non-clinical sample are limitations of this study.
