He is distinguished from members of the Escuela de la Sabana, a prior landscape regionalist group that also focused on the scenery of the Andean region around the Bogotá plateau, by his Japanese training and the pictorial language of his work. Ariza was the son of the photographer Aristides Ariza and Maria Veles. He entered the Escuela de Bellas Artes in 1931 where he worked primarily on woodblock prints and was influenced by Cubism and Mexican muralism; in his early works he focused on indigenist and social issues and made linoleum illustrations such as those for the magazine PAN. Ariza was not inclined to follow European painting and travel to Spain or France, where most of his colleagues studied, so as an alternative he got a scholarship to travel to Japan where he lived from 1936 to 1938.
